SHREYA GHOSHAL: camaraderie with versatility and languages

Apparently, at SaReGaMa’s 75th Children Special Episode director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was mesmerised by a young contestant named Shreya Ghoshal. He was making Devdas (2002) with Ismail Darbar as Music Director where Paro’s voice required innocence, Bhansali traced and auditioned her. Coincidentally, her first recorded track happens to be one of my all time favourites, Bairi Piya and other being Silsila Yeh Chahaat Ka. She exclaims, “I remember I was asked to rehearse the song once before finally recording it. I simply closed my eyes and sang without a break. When I opened my eyes, I noticed a lot of excitement and chaos outside the recording room. Then Sanjayji told me I had sung the song so well that they had recorded it at one go.”

She won the 50th National Award for Best Female Playback Singer for Bairi Piya, her jury citation plainly reads: “For her soulful rendering of the song”, it’s more than just a soulful rendition. The way her tempo and rhythmic density to captive Paro’s pain and desire channelizes confidently.

Over the years, she conquered her innocence and K. Chitra-like soulful voice into versatility. She has sung almost in every genre be it romantic, jazz, classical, devotional, rock and at times in auto-tuned vocalisation. And then comes her cracking command over languages: Assamese, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Punjabi, Telugu, etc. One can’t distinguish her native language when her prowess at mastering languages is at peak dedication, she sounds locale.
